The Five Nights at Freddy’s is behind your favorite TikTok trend
Animatronic Monastery from Five Nights at Freddy’s Inspired. Their lifeless robot faces, coupled with jerky movements, have formed the basis for a beloved survival horror series, which debuted in 2014. But these animatronic creatures scare more than the occasional jump—they also allow people to goof off about their cartoonish nature. And now a clip from the most recent game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach, has inspired a series of trends driving the game’s influence on the world’s largest video sharing app, TikTok.
Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) is a survival horror game series set in a fictional restaurant similar to series like Chuck E Cheese. Freddy Fazbear, a giant animatronic bear, is the series’ mascot, and a security breach introduces a new version of him that gives him a ’80s neon redesign. Edited audio of Glamrock saying she is a “Material Girl” has surfaced on TikTok. The audio was posted on January 5th by etsyursumpiy and has garnered over 105,000 videos on TikTok to date, with the most popular videos garnering over 2.6 million views. Jokes vary, but many videos make fun of one’s inability to save money and spend too much.
The trend has reached a level of popularity where it is being used well outside of fandom, with prominent influencers like Trisha Petas using sound for videos.
Itsoursampire explained over email that he made the edits because he was “bored” and got the idea after watching a play of the game. Together with his girlfriend, he figured out a way to edit a concrete impersonation of the bear’s voice using software called AegeanMusic.
The first edit he made was Freddy telling the security guard he was “free up”, a reference to a meme where people laugh at the idea of telling their mom that they threw up. After she posted, requests “flooded” and they did more, including a “Material Girl” sound. The phrase, “Material Girl” refers to a previous TikTok trend that featured the track “Material Girl” by Saucy Santana. They also created other versions, like another popular version where Freddy giggles and Scatman sings “Scatman” by John.
The original clip is from the most recent game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach, which shows a security guard searching for an immoral robot. As the guard shines their light on him, they exclaim, “Freddie! You’re gonna be on lockdown!” To which Freddie’s distorted digital voice replies, “Officer Vanessa, I don’t know how I got here.” In the meme, Freddy’s line is the one that has been replaced with a funny line.
The Five Nights At Freddy’s fantasy has been a driving sub-culture on TikTok since the app’s early days. In 2019, “Join Us for a Bite” by JT Music and Andrea Storm Caiden sparked a trend where people danced and edited their videos as they moved like the animatronic robots of the world. There are a lot of trends – including another different, dance trend, where people dance like robots to the talk box cover of “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Itssuresampire said they were happy to see Fantasy enjoy the audio and create new memes with them. “I hope we all be able to watch these FNAF audios whenever the next game comes out with fond memories!”
