The teaser for The Boys Red Band has been out, and it features Soldier Boy and Crimson Countless
The hit series shows no signs of reversing the violent, bloody humiliation.
Prime Video unveiled a new red band teaser for the third season of its hit series The Boys at an SXSW panel on Saturday. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Derrick Robertson. There are some new faces in the cast, as well as a scene in the teaser that definitely takes place in the infamous comic book series history.
Boys is set in a fictional universe where superheroes are infested with real but corporate interests and a toxic celebrity-obsessed culture. The most exclusive superhero group is called The Seven and is run by Watt Corporation, which makes superheroes with a substance called compound veku. Homelander (Anthony Starr in a career-building performance), led by Seven, is a violent and restless psychopath. In the guise of an all-American hero. The title “Boys” is spearheaded by Homelander’s adversary, Billy Butcher (Carl Urban), a self-proclaimed vigilante who sets out to investigate the misconduct of seven people, most notably Homelander, who brutally raped the butcher’s late wife.
The finale of S1 ends in a major cliffhanger: The Butcher, determined to blow himself up and take the Homelander with him, changes his mind when the psycho-superhero tells him he has learned that Butcher’s ex-wife, Beka (Shantel Vansanten) still alive. — and raising her (super-powered) son Ryan (Cameron Crowe), which resulted in her being raped by Homelander. That’s where S2 picked it up.
As the season progressed, the boys were fugitives who had actually been leaked for the S1 murder committed by Homelander. Their attempts to purify themselves are thwarted by a mysterious hit man who has blown up someone who can give them useful clues. He is also accused of tracking down a telekinetic terrorist, Keniko (Abraham Lim), the younger brother of Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). The butcher struggles to accept Baker’s son Ryan when Homelander tries to be a father and Ryan learns how to use his power.
Watt’s dominance in Homelander was also challenged when CEO Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) brought in a new member – Stormfront (starring Aya Cash, who stole scene after scene). The two become lovers, and Stormfront helps Homelander recover from the PR disaster. Of course, Stormfront became a Nazi-affiliated superhero, formerly known as Liberty, and the first superhero created with Compound V. And Homelander felt his first moral dilemma, which he loved, and tore through his general hatred of the Nazis.
In the S2 finale, Homelander and Stormfront kidnap Ryan, leading to a showdown between Butcher and Baker. Ryan stuns Stormfront with his laser eyes while threatening his mother, but also accidentally kills Beka. Ryan was taken into custody by the CIA after being blackmailed into leaving a grieving homeland. A-Train (Jesse T. Usher) and Starlight (Erin Moriarty) rejoined the Seven, but The Deep (Chase Crawford) fell out again. Meanwhile, Hughes (Jack Quayd) makes the boys work for Congresswoman Victoria Newman (Claudia Dumitt), her unknown, mysterious killer.
What will S3 bring? A handy hint is that the first S3 episode deserves a “payback”. The name was given to the early superheroes of the Watts comic group, the successors to The Avengers Squad, which was destroyed in the Bulgarian War of 1940. Payback is loosely based on Marvel’s Avengers. Its members include Eagle the Archer who appeared in the TV series S2 (played by Langston Carmen). He is the man who hired Deep- and A-Trains into the Collective Church before the cult turned on him. Last summer, a fictional report from 7 of 7 News told us that the superhero quit acting after being publicly insulted by Eagle Church and is now trying to become a rapper.
The S3 is joined by two other payback members: Soldier Boy (Jensen Achles) – who was briefly mentioned as a Stormfront ally as he approached Liberty on the S2 – and Crimson Countess (Laurie Holden) Guy, whose thermal powers are there. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
We also know that Season 3 will feature one of the comic’s most gripping stories: Heroic, a one-of-a-kind comic book miniseries where the guys infiltrate Watt’s annual party on a remote island for their superheroes, little more than a long weekend. Kinky sex and drug use. Brave to take this story to the big screen, fan Shorner Eric Creep confirmed on Twitter last January that the title of S3’s sixth episode would indeed be a hieroglyph.
How far will the series take Hirogazam’s story? It’s hard to predict – comedic panels are pretty obvious – but the idea is to push the boundaries of prime video to bring The Boys to the big screen. I mean, besides all the gore and bravery, there was a hilarious scene on S2 where the guys meet Love Sausage (Andrew Jackson), whose exposure to compound-V gave them an elongated penis to use as a weapon. Played exactly as you expected. What we see in the teaser is a starfish’s long, deep gaze as it mates — which is so deep. (We’ve already seen him stop the dolphin’s advance with a horn on the S1.)
For the rest of the teaser, the biggest reveal is that Butcher himself decided to invest in Compound V, giving him his own superpower with laser eyes. Will the butcher sometimes become more irregular due to serious side effects? (Yes, probably.) We get a glimpse of Soldier Boy and Crimson Countess and lots of heads and bodies exploding. In other words, the series shows no sign of curbing the violent violence that has become its trademark.
