Best Practices for Successful Mixed Reality Adoption

We can say that technology never sleeps or that human beings never rest.  Whichever way you look at it, innovations are constant.  In keeping with the advent of most of the transformational technologies of the last decade, mixed reality is seemingly a game changer.

Mixed reality comprises augmented reality and virtual reality but in a real world setting.  It is different from virtual reality in that holograms are superimposed on what we see in the real world directly in the user’s field of vision.

The user can use hand gestures and voice to interact with the holograms.  It’s also different from mobile or tablet-based AR in that you don’t have to point the camera and see the projection on a screen.

Why Mixed Adoption Is Really The Key To Future Business Success?

Outside of the entire XR landscape, mixed reality is unique because of the way it is lived.  It’s the theme of movies, which we saw in popular titles like Star Trek and Minority Report, where humans interact with digital holograms.  It gives human-machine interaction a new meaning.

The main reason to adopt mixed reality for innovation comes in the form of two dimensions against three -dimensional.  Everything we see, feel and experience is 3D.  But the large amount of information we have is in 2D, stored on pages or views on screens.  This creates a gap between information and action.

Technology will see greater adoption in companies with applications that improve employee productivity, help with better training and help customer service.

Despite MR’s enormous potential, there are numerous barriers that limit their growth.  The main reason is the lack of clarity about the adoption approach.  Companies must prepare a road map that considers numerous factors, from cost to scalability and, more importantly, the ROI.

Mixed Reality – Strategic approach to boost adoption

A defined strategy can promote MR adoption, helping companies develop their potential.  These are some of the best practices to ensure that your organization adopts mixed reality for all correct reasons in the most ideal way.

1. Development and application design MR

  • Ask “why mixed reality?”  to any process or operation to choose and think spatially.
  • Consider physical and psychological factors as: Where the application is used?  What will operate space staff?  How much movement is needed?
  • During the incorporation and initialization, mention what they can do with the application and how holograms can interact or tabs.
  • Plan for the interaction of objects.  Decide what gestures, you control speech and movements are possible with the MR application.
  • Equilibrate the user interface and do not overcrowd the field of view.  It is not replicating the screen of a computer and, in most cases, will not need anything that would give a 2D application.

2. Use of historical knowledge base

  • The previous generation of engineers had no laptops or mobile phones and was used to take advantage of their memory and analytical skills and therefore recalled the procedure.  Therefore, leadership depended on them and had to hold them to ensure that knowledge is not lost.
  • With the mixed reality, it is less dependent on humans in this regard, because it can capture all MR procedures in the application and create the knowledge base in the cloud, which helps operators with continuous learning future.

3. Solution scalability from POC or working prototype to MVP

  • Develop a proof of concept to determine the effectiveness of the solution.
  • Collect information on how you are helping end users and what can be improved to move to a working prototype.
  • Make sure the working prototype is scalable by checking the following:

  1. Does it work well with a larger user base?
  2. What is the consumption of clouds?
  3. Does the solution need more devices?

4. Conduct user training and awareness sessions

  • Conducting training and spreading awareness throughout the customer’s organization or business as user experience (UX) would be different from existing systems with gestures, voice commands, and interactions.
  • Familiarize end users as data presentation is different for an MR app compared to mobile or tablet apps.

5. ROI Vs. TCO

  • See how much money you’re losing in terms of efficiency and cost without mixed reality, and then what the cost of ownership is relative to your usage and operations.
  • Loading the MR models on the job site and allowing the team to use them uncovers opportunities to change the design and installation plan for the better.  They will be able to identify clashes between components and infrastructure faster.
  • Without an MR approach, the company would not be able to find the faults until the actual installation is done, significantly increasing the cost of back and forth.  This is one of the key places where ROI becomes apparent.

Mixed Reality: The advantage of being the first to move is available

Staying relevant has always been important, but it is now even more.  With the way the world has changed and the way technology is progressing, there is no better time to act than now.

Companies that are, at the least willing to test the waters now, be ready for what comes next: a technological revolution and a large digital massive change with emerging technologies such as mixed reality and intelligent connectivity.
