Momonosuke’s Resolve, A Scabbard Return, and more in One Piece Chapter 1048 (full-length breakdown)

One Piece Chapter 1048 Scandals was finally released earlier today, and with them came some interesting developments for the Onigashima raid.  It seems that the beginning of the end of the Onigashima raid has finally arrived, judging by the events where One Piece Chapter 1048 ends.

If this is indeed the beginning of the end of the Onigashima raid, then author Eichiro Oda has changed opinion from a statement he made several years ago about Luffy and Kaido’s fight.  However, it is entirely possible that it may have been spurious from Oda and that One Piece does not fully mark the beginning of the end of the chapter 1048 raid.

The Fiery Conflict of One Piece Chapter 1048 Suggests the Beginning of the End for the Onigashima Raid

One Piece Chapter 1048 begins its story content right away where the previous issue left off.  Luffy tells Momonosuke to get Onigashima out of the way, who replies that it cannot be done.

He begins to say that this is not possible, but misses his mother, father and childhood sister as he hears a voice which instills his belief in reviving the Kozuki clan.

It looks like Momonosuke is getting the push he needs to do, as he starts pushing Onigashima with his dragon-form body.  Meanwhile, Kaido and Luffy are staring at each other as they prepare to attack each other.  The former reminds the latter that Vano’s hero was burned 20 years ago, as his body was burning in the fire.

The new technique, called Flaming Drum Dragon, allows Kaido to heat his body with flames so much that part of the skull’s dome ignites and melts upon contact.  He tells Luffy that it has been a lawless land since Oden’s death and that the people have waited this time for “You Saviors” to show up.

Kaido then tells him that his right hand will not crash because he will vaporize it.  He responds by mocking Kaido before preparing his attack and remembering Boss Hyogoro teaches him to use Ryuo for contactless attacks.  As a result, his hand would not vaporize, allowing Luffy to confidently launch his attack without worry.

The two then launched their attack, Luffy being the Gum-Gum Bajrang Gun and Kaido being the Rising Dragon Blazing Bagua.  An earlier attack mentions the Hindu monkey god Bajrang Bali, who was likely the inspiration for Sun Wukong.

The kanji used for Luffy’s attack means “monkey king”, further establishing the figure of the monkey god for him.

One Piece Chapter 1048: Inside the Dome of the Skull

One Piece Chapter 1048 then takes the perspective inside the dome of the skull, where Usop and Hamlet are seen resting with Kinmon and Okiku.  Apparently, the former inadvertently abandoned the latter and apologized for it, pleading for survival.

Meanwhile, other samurai throughout the castle are cheering for Luffy, saying that they are counting on him to put an end to Kaido for good.  As a samurai shouts that his nightmare won’t end until the latter is inspired by Wano, Kawamatsu begins to flashback to the day of Oden’s execution.

His flashback begins shortly after Oden’s death when he and the other acolytes begin to run for their lives.  Meanwhile, Orochi tells Kaido that they will only go to one place for now, and he is the kuri to protect Momonosuke’s life as heir to the Kozuki clan.  Kaido says that he will deal with Oden’s child himself.

At this time, Wano’s citizens seem to be on the run to Kad, begging him for mercy and asking him to stop hunting the Kozuki clan.  In return, however, the captain of the Beast Pirates swung his kanabo, wounding the group without hesitation.

Meanwhile, Orochi orders the Beast Pirates to “shoot down any bugs that dare to challenge their shoguns.”

The next panel shows the Oden castle in flames, with unknown voices confirming Toki Kozuki to be dead in Bakura Town.  One of the voices says that no one else was seen fleeing the ruins of Oden Castle, leading another to happily say that the Kozuki line is officially dead.

Meanwhile, Orochi and Kaido confront the daimyo of Udon, Ringo, Hakumai and Kibi, asking whether they will cooperate or try to wage war.  They respond that their answer is clearly the latter, refusing to recognize a shogun who is not Kozuki.

As Akazaya Nine confronts Kaido in a panel, four men and their soldiers bravely wield a dragon-form Kaido.

However, a few Boro breaths from Kaido completely wipe out his forces, as Orochi laughs and says that it would be an insult to call him a samurai.  One fighter curses Orochi for supporting Kad, while the other tells him to keep quiet because the shogun’s ears are everywhere.

Wano’s nemesis is then shown, possibly with Orochi ordering unseen soldiers to track down every able-bodied youth and bring them to the weapons factories.  He says that the whole country will become an arms factory because families are being broken into pieces and the water is getting polluted.

A polluted, desolate Vano is seen in a wide-shot panel as a mother and child who do not grow crops and have nothing to eat.  Meanwhile, men are being put to death in prisons, as they are taunted that no one is coming to save them.

Meanwhile, the men continue to put their faith in Lady Toki’s words.

Orochi then mocks some civilians for eating a starvingly poor smile, before saying that the rest of the city of Ebisu should follow suit in a brutal joke.  He specifically describes how their stomach will remain empty, but as their loved ones die, they will only be able to laugh.

As Kawamatsu’s flashback ends, he calls it the perfect fate for the pests of this country.

One PieceChapter 1048: The Unexpected Return and the Last Page

One Piece Chapter 1048 marks the end of this flashback to the present day Orochi, who is a fire and Hiyori is cursing Kozuki.  As he is engulfed in flames in his Devil Fruit Zone form, he says that he is taking her with him and that he should not have underestimated the anger of the Kurozumi clan.

He says that he will see her in Hell and they can drink there together, as an unknown man draws his sword while commenting on things getting out of hand.  In a beautiful set of panels, Denjiro appears and beheads Orochi, hoping this time to kill the shogun for good.

Two panels that immediately show the happy Wano citizens at the Fire Festival, as do a sky lantern that read, “Please make Orochi disappear.”  This is followed by a stern-looking Denjiro, followed by panels showing Orochi’s head being dropped, Komurasaki’s relieved expression, and more Wano civilians at the Fire Festival.

A final panel shows a shot of two legible sky lanterns, one of which reads “Free us from this hell” and the other “Give me a sip of clear water.”  The immediate next panel of One Piece Chapter 1048 shows Luffy and Kaido beginning their struggle, as the two stare at each other in the final panel of the chapter.

No series break has been announced for next week.

One Piece Chapter 1048: Briefly

One Piece Chapter 1048 is an incredibly written chapter that serves several essential purposes as the Onigashima Raid, presumably, reaches its end.  Orochi seems to have finally died, the actions of Kaido and Orochi and their effect on the Wano citizens are reinterpreted, and the citizen’s desire for freedom is confirmed.

Additionally, One Piece chapter 1048’s display of Kaido’s new form is another essential purpose for the end of the raid.  Essentially only One Piece Chapter 1048 didn’t, which is required before the end of the raid, starting Kaido’s backstory.

However, it is incredibly likely that it will start at some point in the following few chapters.
