A Joint operation by authorities to rescue homeless people in Sibu resulted in the team uncovering 10 people with mental health issues.

Sarawak Women, Family and Community Welfare Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said they were sleeping along the five-foot path from the tents and would be referred to the Sibu Hospital psychiatric ward for medical observation. .

“We will send them to the Sibu Hospital psychiatric ward until their condition is stable and they can return to the Homeless Temporary Transit Center (TTG),” she said.

Fatimah said the pilot project to save the homeless with the assistance of Sibu Hospital and TTG Sibu was a short-term approach to reduce the number of mentally challenged homeless people in public places.

“TTG is not a psychiatric nursing home based on the interpretation of the Mental Health Law,” she said when she visited the homeless at TTG Sibu.

In accordance with this, his ministry requests that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, establish a Psychiatric Care Center in Sarawak and build a new self-development center in the northern region of the state.

Fatimah said that 237 homeless people, 194 men and 43 women, were registered in 2020 in the state by the Sarawak Ministry of Social Development and the state Welfare Department.

“In 2021 there were 158 people (148 men and 10 women).

“We found that among homeless people for 2020 and 2021, 38% of them had mental health issues,” she said.

On the creation of TTG Sibu, which is the first in Sarawak, she said that he currently had 14 homeless people.

“Originally there were 40 of them, including 29 men and 11 women from December last year to July 21 this year, but we have released 26 people,” he said.

She added that TTGs would be established in Kuching, Miri and Bintulu.
