Intestine Cancer: Gut health is an indication of a person’s physical health. A healthy gut maintains most of the functions of the body. From this it can be understood that how serious can be colon cancer. Cancer of the small intestine begins with a 20 feet long tube-like structure known as the small intestine. The primary function of the small intestine (in addition to absorbing nutrients into the bloodstream) is to move digested food from the stomach to the large intestine.
The small intestine also produces hormones that speed up digestion and help the immune system fight off viruses and bacteria that enter the stomach through the mouth.
Dr SK Bala, consultant surgical oncology at HCG EKO Cancer Center, Newtown, Kolkata, told TV9 that although the small intestine is an important part of the gastrointestinal tract, there are other types of cancers related to the colon (such as the large intestine). Cancer is relatively rare in this organ compared to cancers of the stomach, esophagus and rectum.
Four prominent types of cancer of the small intestine
The small intestine is broadly divided into three parts – the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine connected to the stomach, pancreas and bile duct. In this way the digestive juices secreted from the pancreas and liver enter the small intestine through the duodenum to aid digestion.
Dr Bala said, “The small intestine is a powerhouse of different types of cells and four major types of cancer can occur in this organ.”
Among these, adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumor, lymphoma, sarcoma are prominent.
